After playing elite and professional Rugby Union I have been exposed to various styles of Strength & Conditioning programs and coaches across multiple teams, countries and playing levels.

In that time, my experience with S&C programs was that everyone did essentially the same training program.

I wish I knew back then, what I know now.  That individualised programs address the needs of an athlete, and not just how much weight they can lift, but do they need more acceleration, change of direction skills, is their speed technique good or bad?

I wish there would have been an individualised S & C program when I was younger that worked on both my strengths and weaknesses in season and off season.

An individualised S & C programme also helps build injury prevention because it develops the skill of moving well, in movement patterns that Rugby requires, before that movement is loaded with volume or intensity.

There is no “One size fits all” for quality Strength and Conditioning, and a S&C programme should be constantly changing as an athlete grows and develops their skills.

At S5 we have designed, assisted, and implemented strength and conditioning programs across multiple sports at the elite and youth development levels and continue to work with female and male athletes and teams from a variety of backgrounds with great results.
